Naked or dirty iced, oozing whipped cream, covered in lazy dripping petals and drizzled in syrup… Yep, we’re still talking about cakes here, and nothing really out sexes a naked cake in all its bare bohemian glory and raw, natural charm.

Gone are days of inch thick blankets of fondant, swathes of heavy sugarpaste flowers, and fussy piping. Today’s cakes are stripped right back to their birthday suits, filled with scrumptious fillings like lemon curd, dulce de leche and fresh berries, primped with cascades of fresh flowers, fruit and the prettiest greenery.

Naked cakes kicked off big time as a wedding trend last year but we hope it’s a trend that keeps on kicking on, because what’s better than cake? A cake that you want to stick your face into, that’s what. Plus you don’t need to be getting married to whip up one of these beauties.  As the saying goes, it’s someone’s birthday somewhere.

Here are our top cakes to tempt you to go bare.
