Fresh flowers can bring you so much joy, so incorporating them in your home styling is a fun way of bringing your interior scheme together and allowing your personality to shine. Flowers are versatile and simple to use in so many ways. So if you need to bring life to an uninspired little little corner, or need to freshen up a home office space – flowers are your friend. Here are a few simple little tips to get you started. Though remember, as always, there are no rules!

Tip 1. Colour coordinate your flower choices to your interior.
One of the simplest ways of getting that ‘stylist touch’ when it comes to flowers within your home, is to coordinate your flower choices with your interior scheme. Have an idea in mind when choosing your flowers of where you’d like to place them so you can decide which colour direction you’re headed in. This helps flower lovers, like me, make a quick pick when strapped for time! I can spend inordinate amounts of time choosing the perfect bunch. Nothing wrong with that of course, but having a colour palette in mind really does help bring the perfect arrangement together, quickly and stylishly.
Tip 2: Experiment with your vessels!
Floral arrangements in your home don’t have to be styled using a standard glass vase – the type we are oh-so-used to seeing! Experiment with whatever vessel or everyday item you have around your home. Personally, I like to up cycle glass bottles, milk bottles and mason jars for floral styling.
My recent obsession is with small vases as they easily fit on shelves or tuck into little spots that need some colour and floral delight. Play with clustered arrangements of vases – different heights and sizes work well together, add interest and can be a great little feature for a coffee table or desk.
Tip 3: Use fresh flowers to decorate spaces.
Treat your fresh blooms just like you would an ornament. They are a great way of adding much needed height to a vignette or tablescape, or introducing the pop of colour you are after. There are so many amazing choices and I am always discovering new varieties to bring home. Colour coordinate your flowers to your home wares and decorative items – try contrasting colours or similar shades in different tones.
Tip 4: Keep it simple.
Sometimes simple is best and keeping things simple is a surefire way to achieve timeless appeal. Stick with one variety of flower and choose your vase or vessel accordingly.
Try a variety such as an Australian native for sculptural appeal or the ‘back in trend’ carnations, with their frills upon frills of floral goodness. Either stick to the same colour palette, or mix colours within the same variety. The only way to learn what works is to experiment!
Tip 5: There Are No Rules!
I am not a trained florist, but I adore flowers and enjoy going to the markets and picking fresh bunches for the coming week and then arranging them for my home.
The delicious thing about styling with flowers is that there are no rules! Grab your favourites, play with colours, contrasts and styles and see what works best for your home.
