She sees life through pastel coloured lenses, and we are loving her point of view! Meet Katy Thomas, the gorgeous owner of The Eye Spy Millk Bar, an online store and blog with the cutest homewares around. We got the scoop on where this new mum gets inspiration and what she’s been up to.
After nearly 8 years working in the PR, Marketing and Advertising industries across a range of fashion and lifestyle brands, I was exposed to the wonderful world of style and design.
Whilst I’ve always loved the fashion industry, I started to develop a strong passion for the home
From interior decorating and design to shopping for homewares and furniture. With an inbox overflowing with design inspiration on a daily basis and home magazines knocking on her door each month, I knew I had to set out on a new adventure and follow my passion. From here, The Eye Spy Milk Bar was born.
The Eye Spy Milk Bar lifestyle blog launched in September 2012 and is a documentation of my style, an outlet for my creativity and a destination for all the lovely things in life. With a strong focus on home interiors, DIY projects and design, I aim to share my own experiences and encourage people to feel inspired.
I was constantly taking orders from my friends for my super talented Dad to make a range of custom made homewares. From benches to tables, coat racks to herb boxes, the interest continued to grow. With this in mind, I decided to launch The Eye Spy Milk Bar Etsy store to house the collection of handmade homewares and make taking orders that little bit easier!
I love being creative without having any limitations, from product design to blog post ideas. Working from home allows me the flexibility to spend my days with Cleo, whilst also doing something I love. It’s the perfect mix.
I find inspiration in obvious places like magazines, books, blogs, Pinterest and Instagram and I’m always taking pictures of things that inspire me. From interesting floor tiles to patterned walls, cute colour combos, pretty flowers and fun interiors.
I’m a big believer in creating a positive and inspiring workspace and a moodboard is the perfect place to pin your inspirations and document your loves.
Super cute homewares and fun interiors get me excited! The icing on the cake is the delightful price tag! Decorating your home doesn’t need to cost a fortune and finding pieces that complement this idea without cleaning out your bank account is something I’m really passionate about. I love sharing my finds through the blog and I hope to extend this further with a styling element to the business down the track.
Every day starts with a coffee! My husband usually hand delivers a take away coffee straight after his bootcamp (which is a heavenly start to the day!) or Cleo and I walk up to get one. Our mornings are usually spent enjoying walks, park play dates and coffee catch ups with friends. Cleo has a sleep around lunchtime so once she goes down, I’m straight into work mode; Catching up on emails, planning blog posts, reviewing orders etc. Once Cleo is awake it’s playtime again. I usually sit down after dinner with my laptop to pick up where I left off earlier in the day. The days are busy but I love spending them with Cleo and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Being organised is the key!
I’ve been busy working on some exciting projects for the business, with plans to expand the homewares collection, deliver affordable home styling packages and I would love to publish a book full of inspiration down the track. At the moment, I love spending my days with little Cleo, documenting my loves and inspirations through the blog and running the business from home. It’s the perfect mix.
My standard beauty routine involves cleansing, toning and moisturizing followed by a love affair with a light touch of bronze and a soft pink cheek. It’s fairly boring but I’ve learnt to apply everything with record speed since having Cleo! My latest obsession is Milk face & body oil, which leaves my skin feeling amazing! Look after your skin (especially your face) as it’s on show for the rest of your life & drink bucket loads of water!
Before I had Cleo I would run every day and do yoga/ bootcamp once a week. Since having Cleo my exercise routine usually involves a daily walk with her and yoga (if I can get there!)
I’d have to say Tall Timber in Prahran is my favourite place to eat as it’s my second home! I live there most days and they help kickstart my day with the best coffee! Radio Mexico in St Kilda is one of my favourite restaurants. The Mexican food is amazing! For a snack I love Tahini balls which I make from scratch and a few pieces of dark almond chocolate tick the box for afternoon treats.
I try to eat healthy with a good balance of foods. Lots of protein, veggies and of course a little treat every now and then. I’ve been gluten intolerant for the last 7 years and only recently been able to eat it again, so this has opened up a whole new menu of choices which is exciting!
To unwind, it’s walking, yoga and a glass of wine after a big day! We live in Windsor, Melbourne – it’s such a great place (central to everything) and Cleo and I walk everywhere. We have the Prahran market around the corner, lots of great cafes/ restaurants and Fawkner Park/ The Botanical gardens are both just down the road.
I’m super organised and love our home to be tidy, however since having little Cleo, our house has become more practical (vases, coffee table books and all breakables have gone) and kiddie proofing is now the focus! I’m now all about kid friendly interiors!
My style is fun, colourful and vibrant and our home reflects this happy energy.
I love colour and the energy this creates. I love to work with a good base of white (white floorboards and walls) and then add pops of colour. In short, white with a pop of colour!
Homewares I’m loving at the moment:
- Cactus plants in pretty little pots
- Beautiful smelling candles
- Bright coloured cushions
- Hexagon shelves
Brands I love:
- Castle & Things
- Lumiere Art Co
- Merci Perci
- Tassel + Gaine
Favourite homewares shops are:
- Happiness Place (Paddington, QLD)
- Crate Expectations (Armadale, Hampton, VIC)
- Fenton & Fenton (Prahran, VIC)
A beautiful life means being happy, healthy, making the most of each day and stopping to enjoy the little things. One of my favourite things is a Sunday morning at home, relaxing and reading the papers with coffees and playing with our cheeky little Cleo. Enjoy a house full of flowers (I love Peonies- They inject so much loveliness to your home), burn a beautiful candle and start the day with a positive mind.
