Happy International Women’s Week! Clearly we think every day is the day for women to be bold, fearless and advocate for gender equality. But this week, regardless of your gender, the spotlight is on taking action to recognise the enormous value that women from all over the world add to the fabric of our society AND the problems and biases that still exist.
The IWD’s 2017 theme is #beboldforchange, asking us to call on the masses to help forge a more inclusive, gender equal world. And there’s no doubt that a good side of boldness is required to be fully conscious and vocal about issues of violence, misogyny and gender inequality.
This week’s arrangement is a celebration of femininity, with classic pink roses, fragrant freesia and tough silvery corokia branches that brim with personality.
These green tinged, pale pink roses are an absolute favourite with the BBC team. Not the standard sherbety pink you often see, but a subtle grown-up ombre that’s a delight when it blooms. Simply trim and pop immediately into fresh water, making sure you use a vase that’s tall enough to provide support for these long, leggy stems.
Freesias bring the fragrance hit this week! The delicate fragrance from its tiny tubular blossoms is a common note in most designer perfumes including Calvin Klein Eternity, Issey Miyake L’Eay D’Issey and Ralph by Ralph Lauren.
These classic luxurious blooms always make you feel like you’ve got it “together” and tread the line between secret garden nostalgia and Upper East Side perfection. They look gorgeous clustered en masse, or just peeping out from beneath other, bolder, blooms. A care tip – pulling away lower wilted blossoms will encourage the next ones to bloom.
Finally, this week’s corokia is a real treat. Tiny silvery leaves sparkle across tough bare branches. It’s the perfect accompaniment to soft petalled roses, or looks equally stunning and sculptural just on it’s own. When your arrangement has long wilted, you keep these silvery stems in a simple vase or pot – perfect texture for the upcoming autumn season.
Take a look at this week’s IWD inspired arrangement below, with all the step by step instructions. Otherwise, freestyle your arrangement so it’s as unique as you are.
Here’s to strong women and embracing femininity in all it’s forms!

Here’s what you’ll need.
Pale pink roses
Flower shears or secateurs
Three vases in varying sizes
1. Build a foundation
Cross stems of corokia in your largest vase, with one stem long and at an angle, and another shorter and closer to the rim.
2. Add roses
Prepare your rose stems by removing all lower foliage.
Trim and tuck in 5 or 6 roses in a cluster, near the mouth of the vase.
Add a little loose and wild texture by nestling in 3 tall stems of freesias.
4. Posy time
Create a small posy with your leftover roses in the palm of your hand. Add a few tall staggered freesias to add height.
Trim off at an angle and pop into your clean medium vase or bottle, filled with water.
5. Leftover love
Put any corokia off cuts to good use, and simply pop the springy stems into your final, and smallest, vase.
6. The line up
Line up your three vases from large to small.
Classic beauty, fierce strength!
