Prioritising self care and pleasure has been a hot topic here at BBC HQ. We recently caught up with the team over at Retreat Yourself (full article on our site, if you’re interested), and had an awesome discussion about the need to make pleasure a priority in the midst of daily chaos.
Because how are you meant to make great decisions, work in an energised way or be present for the people around you if you’re feeling stressed, flustered, bored or resentful?
Which brings us to flowers! Having fresh flowers around you, throughout your home or on your desk at work, brings little moments of joy to your day, connection to nature and forces you to experience the present – when a bright petal catches your eye, or you get a whiff of delicious fragrance.
So, congratulations to you! For building pleasure right into your life with flowers. Perhaps this week, share the love and get someone else on the pleasure train by throwing a few blooms in a glass and popping them on your colleague’s desk or neighbour’s doorstop.
May your cup of joy overflow!

In the box this week

Waratah
Seriously the queen of flowers! The emblem of NSW and a protected bush bloom! And lucky for you, these beauties are now available as a cut flower – only a recent development because these beauties are notoriously difficult to grow! Treasure your waratah and shower it with regular water changes and it should last for a couple of weeks.

Coral reef roses
It’s not just their lush name that made us fall in love with these beauties! Their vibrant coral hue is bang on trend and puts us in the mind of hot sand and pineapples. You can encourage tight buds to bloom but lightly running your finger around the inner petals or blowing on the flower head to coax the petals open.

Pink double ranunculus
These soft ruffly blossoms are a delicious addition to any arrangement! If they look slightly floppy when you receive them, not to fear, snip the stems at a sharp angle and get them straight into fresh water. They’ll revive throughout the day.

Bud wax
This week’s bud wax adds a fun bit of texture to your arrangement. The tiny buds are pre-bloom but we love how they look like glossy little berries. Strip the spear like leaves from the base and pop into fresh water and they should last a few weeks. A few short stems in a bud vase also make super cute, and long lasting, addition to a bathroom sink or shelf.

Spray carnations
Also known as Pixie Carnations (cute!), these miniature carnations are make the perfect supporting act for bigger blooms. Use them clustered or wriggle them out at longer lengths for a more “wild” style of arrangement.

Snoddy Grass
Tropical and lush – we love snoddy grass! Its long, pliant leaves radiate from tall stems – seriously useful in adding texture an arrangement. We love splitting a tall stem into two shorter to get more bang for your buck, and to add shorter pieces that droop over the edges of your vase.
